About

Postmanism: 1. an example, usually from television, of visual media’s unappeasable appetite for entertainment at the expense of all intellectual judgment. 2. a reference to the radical incoherence of television, whose form tends to destroy any attempt at meaningful communication. 3. a reference to Neil Postman’s media analyses in Amusing Ourselves to Death.

How did you decide to keep a television, or to continue to watch it? I am deeply sympathetic with your posts, but for that reason I stay the hell away from TV. Interestingly, this has the effect that I can only liken to a time machine: when I do end up in front of actual television, with actual commercials, after say a year or six months, everything has sped up and grown flashier at a rate that I doubt I would have noticed had I not abstained for that period. There are gadgets that I don’t recognize, celebrities I’d never heard of, music and images that break taboos I hadn’t imagined surpassing. But do you at Postmanisms keep watching out of a sense of obligation to track the culture? To keep current with your students? For the moments of brilliance amidst the ever-expanding pile of crap?

  2. I don’t own a television.

    Hey, man…
So, I was just reading an except on my own from David Foster Wallace on irony and its shortcomings, like of rectifying what it parodies and mocks, and I just could not help but think of Family guy over and over and over and how there’s not real sincerity in it, no genuine solution to the whole thing, and well…you get it. Just how Family Guy is the apotheosis of what DFW was talking about.
So, I just googled DFW and Family, seeing if maybe there was something like a comment by him on the show, I didn’t expect one, but your post came up, and am I glad I found someone who caught this before me. You hit the nail on the head, man.
I saved what you wrote, and plan on reading some more of your stuff.
    Kudos.
Hope you have a Good New Year,
    Stay Smart, man.
